An electric vehicle is the new buzz word in the automobile industry currently. With fossil fuel reserves running out and pollution levels increasing to dangerous levels, an alternative to internal combustion engine is the need of the hour. Electric vehicles have proven to be an alternative in demand these days as it runs clean and produces zero emissions. While there have been several electric scooter options to choose from, Ather has pretty much enjoyed a segment of its own with its full-fledged models owing to promising quality and range. But the segment now has another scooter from a mainstream two-wheeler manufacturer, Bajaj. Chetak makes a comeback after 14 years in an all-electric avatar and seems to be quite promising on paper. It directly rivals the Ather 450 in our country.

Bajaj Chetak has been priced in the range of Rs 1 lakh - Rs 1.15 lakh (ex-showroom). While Ather 450 is priced between Rs 1.13 lakh - Rs 1.45 lakh (ex-showroom).

Bajaj Chetak vs Ather 450: Variants and Color Options

Bajaj offers the Chetak in two variants: Urbane and Premium. The Premium variant is available in four color options namely Hazelnut, Indigo Metallic, Velutto Rosso, and Brooklyn Black. While the Urbane variant comes in two paint shades - Citrus Rush and Cyber White.

While Ather 450 is available in three variants namely Ather 450 STD, Ather 450X Plus, and Ather 450 Pro. It comes in three color options namely White, Grey, and Mint.

Both these electric scooters come packed with a plethora of features. Bajaj Chetak offers an LED headlamp along with horse-shoe shaped DRLs. Other highlighted features include ‘feather touch’ switchgear and retractable luggage hook. It also comes with Smartphone connectivity and can be accessed by the app. The app delivers information related to navigation, tracking, battery condition and range, and safety updates.  

While the Ather 450 Electric Scooter also features a LED headlamp along with pilot lamps integrated into the front cowl. The rear end gets an inverted U-shaped LED taillight and the turning indicators. It also comes with Smartphone connectivity. Additional feature includes an IP65 rated 7-inch capacitive touchscreen system that boasts of a drop-down menu for all the information regarding the vehicle that a rider needs.

Both the scooters feature reverse mode. Overall, Ather 450 has an edge over the Bajaj Chetak as it comes with an internet-enabled pre-installed SIM card that offers real-time GPS data. Bajaj Chetak, on the other hand, offers a one-year free subscription for internet data.

In terms of braking, the Premium variant of Chetak gets a disc brake upfront and a drum brake on the rear wheel. The Urbane variant comes with drum brake on both the ends. 

The Ather 450, on the other hand, gets disc brakes at both the ends along with a combined braking system as standard for additional safety.

Bajaj Chetak vs Ather 450: Engine Specifications

Bajaj Chetak Electric sources power from a 7 bhp BLDC electric motor, which gets its power from a 4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a torque output of 16 Nm. It comes with two riding modes namely Eco and Sport in which it has a claimed range of 95 kms and 85 kms, respectively between charges. 

While the Ather 450 is powered by a 7.2 bhp BLDC electric motor, which gets its power from a 2.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The torque output is rated at 20.5 Nm. It has three riding modes namely Eco, Ride, and Sport. While Eco offers 75 km range, Ride and Sport have claimed a range of 65 kms and 55 kms, respectively.

The battery pack of both these electric scooters is IP67 rated. The battery of Chetak comes with a 3-years warranty per 50,000 kms. While the battery of Ather 450 comes with a 3-years warranty per unlimited km.

Bajaj Chetak comes with an in-built charger that can be plugged to a regular 5-ampere power outlet. One hour of charging provides 25 percent of battery charge. For a 100 percent charge, it will likely take five hours. It does not support fast charging.

Ather 450’s battery pack takes about 4 hours for a full charge through a 5-ampere socket. But it can also make use of DC fast charging and it charges at a rate of 1 km per minute.
