Piaggio & C. SpA is an Italian manufacturer is renowned worldwide via its subsidiaries that sell automobiles. The company was founded in the year 1884 by Rinaldo Piaggio and has its headquarters in Pontedera, Italy. Piaggio owns seven brand subsidiaries namely: Piaggio, Vespa, Gilera, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Derbi, and Scarabeo. The brand has an impressive history which has numerous twists and turns. The company was started by Rinaldo Piaggio as a locomotive and railway carriage manufacturing company.

During the world war, the company started manufacturing aeronautical and military sector based vehicle includes MAS anti-submarine motorboats, aeroplanes and seaplanes. In the year 1940, the Italian economy was going through a hard time, and people were not able to afford foreign-made vehicles. So, after the death of his father Rinaldo his son Enrico took over the business. After seeing the plight of the people of his country, he was determined to make an affordable vehicle for the people of Italy. It was this thought which laid the foundation of the legendary Vespa.

The company entered the Indian market in collaboration with the Indian two-wheeler manufacturer Bajaj motors in the year 1960s. Bajaj secured the rights to manufacture Vespa in India, and soon the vehicle became the people’s favourite. The last contract of produce and sell was given to LML motors which ended in the year 1999.

In the year 2016, Piaggio entered the Indian market with six new models of the Vespa. These are models sold by Vespa SXL 150, VXL 150, SLX 125, VXL 125, Elegance and the Vespa LX 125.
