With the onset of strict BSVI emission norms regime, a lot of makers are going the way of ditching diesel engine cars from their portfolio. Some are altogether ditching diesel models, while others are discontinuing the diesel version of smaller cars. This is because upgrading the existing diesel engines of their line-up will mean that the makers will have to incur significant expenses for the upgrade. This will in turn drive up the prices of the updated diesel engine model cars that will comply with the strict BS-VI emission norms. The crux of the problems lies here as the makers think that the price difference between diesels and petrol will be so stark that the customers will rather go for the petrol models due to the price difference. Hence the decision to ditch diesels.

However, until the upcoming BS-VI emissions come into force, the prices for the diesel models of the car will remain as is, and this is the reason why a lot of customers are now choosing diesel over petrol models. Let’s take the case of US carmaker Ford’s EcoSport sub-4 meter compact SUV. The sales for the EcoSport for the duration of April 2018 to March 2019 stood at 46,265 units. An overwhelming number of 30,236 out the total number of models sold were diesel units. Hence clearly showing that the customers prefer the diesel model of EcoSport over the petrol models.

Now coming to the Mahindra XUV300, which was launched fairly recently in the Indian market. Till March 2019, the Indian UV maker sold a total of 9,532 units of the XUV300 out of which 6,788 units were diesel engine models. Not just these two vehicles in the sub-4 meter compact SUV segment, but an overwhelming majority of around 80% of the vehicles sold in the segment belonged to the diesel engine category. This goes on to show that the diesel demand is still going strong in the market, at least in the sub compact SUV segment.

Talking of the mechanical aspect of Ford EcoSport, the SUV comes with a 1.5L petrol engine rated to deliver 123 Bhp and 150 Nm this engine is mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. Then the diesel unit is a 1.5L turbo engine rated to deliver 98.6 Bhp and 215 Nm, this engine too is offered with a 5 speed manual gearbox. A high performance petrol variant of EcoSport comes with a 1L turbo petrol engine rated to deliver 124 Bhp and 170 Nm.

Talking of the engines of the Mahindra XUV300, the 1.2 liter petrol engine leads the segment in torque output and produces 110 Bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. While the 1.5 liter diesel engine is ahead of segment in power and produces 115 Bhp of power and 300 Nm of torque. These come with a manual gearbox and an automatic scheduled to be launched later.
