Toyota Added Hybrid Powertrain to Hilux Pick-up Truck

Toyota has revealed the Hilux hybrid for the international market. The pick-up truck will go on sale by next year. The company claims that the new 48V hybrid powertrain will further increase the efficiency of the Hilux by 5 percent. The hybrid powertrain comes paired with a 2.8-litre diesel unit that Toyota is already utilizing in the Fortuner and Hilux. The manufacturer has not confirmed whether this new hybrid version will be launched in India or not.

The diesel engine is paired to a belt-system-driven small generator that charges the new 48V lithium battery. The new battery is lightweight enough to be mounted beneath the seats to reduce the amount of cabin space, and it weighs only 7.6 kg. The 12V system equipped in the Hilux pick-up truck is also powered by this 48V battery.

Once the 48V battery is completely charged, it can send power of 16 bhp and peak torque of 65 Nm to the engine via the motor generator to improve power, acceleration, and efficiency. The engine has been modified accordingly so that it can adapt to the new hybrid system. The robust belt material and redesigned two-arm belt tensioner provide a quieter ride and a comfortable driving experience. The unit is now Euro 6d-compliant, and it is like a DOHC, 16-valve, 2.8-litre diesel engine that churns out 202 bhp at 3,400 rpm and 500 Nm of peak torque between 1,600 and 2,800 rpm.

The additional power of the new battery system provides better linear acceleration and throttle response in an urban environment, especially from a standstill. The firm said that the addition of these new efficiency measures enhances the off-road ability of the truck. The regenerative braking aids in charging the battery and improves stability on steep descents. The new multi-terrain select system and start-stop system have been enhanced by the manufacturer to give drivers the option to manage the truck’s stability control settings. Toyota has also improved the water-wading capabilities of the pick-up truck by waterproofing the DC-DC converter and the 48V battery. The new Hilux hybrid has a 700-mm water-wading capability.
