Tata Motors unveiled its fourth Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RSVF) in Chandigarh on November 28, 2023. The automaker stated that this new RVS facility utilizes environment-friendly processes, and it will be able to scrap around 12,000 vehicles each year. Tata Motors has three RSV facilities in Surat, Jaipur, and Bhubaneshwar. In September 2023, the automaker unveiled its scrapping facility in Surat, which can recycle 15,000 vehicles every year.
The new facility was inaugurated by Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, on November 28. It is called 'Re.Wi.Re (Recycle with Respect).' The company said that the new facility has been operated and developed by its partner, Dada Trading Company. The facility will be able to dismantle end-of-life commercial and passenger vehicles and it will be completely digitized.

The Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, Mr. Shailesh Chandra, shared his views on the momentous launch by stating that "Today marks a significant milestone as we unveil the scrappage facility in Chandigarh. Tata Motors has always been at the forefront of embracing innovation and sustainability to shape the future of the automotive industry. By encouraging vehicle owners to retire their older, more polluting commercial and passenger vehicles, we are taking a monumental leap towards a more sustainable future. Through this initiative, we aspire to drive the adoption of newer, safer, and more fuel-efficient vehicles in alignment with our vision of a cleaner and healthier planet.”
Tata Motors has dedicated stations to dismantle various vehicle components, including batteries, tyres, fuel, oils, gasses, and liquids. The fully digitalized facility is loaded with dedicated cell-type and line-type dismantling for both types of vehicles, and all its processes are paperless and seamless.
The company said that scrapping the old vehicles will further aid in getting rid of the polluting vehicles. This process can increase the number of safer and more fuel-efficient vehicles on the market.
According to the estimates provided by the Indian government, there are 51 lakh light motor vehicles in India that are over 20 years old, and another 34 lakh that are over 15 years old. There are 17 lakh Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) without a valid fitness certificate, and they are over 15 years old. The vehicle scrappage ecosystem is likely to produce more job opportunities.
The vehicle scrapping policy was first announced in August 2021, and it focuses on reducing the number of old and unfit vehicles in the country to curb vehicular pollution. In comparison to the newer models, the older ones are known for contaminating the environment more. The main aim of this policy is to de-register private vehicles that are older than 20 years and commercial ones older than 15 years. Just like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu and Mahindra also own scrapping facilities in the country.
