The mid size compact SUV segment is going pretty hot in India right now and recent launches like the Tata Harrier as well as upcoming models like the MG Hector have made it even more popular recently. Currently the segment has options like the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500, Jeep Compass, Tata Hexa and Hyundai Tucson for the customers in the Indian market. However, a downside to the popularity of these vehicles is that the waiting period on delivery of these SUVs has only risen over time. Currently, the longest waiting period on any SUV in this segment is on Tata Harrier, which has a waiting period of 4 months in Bangalore. This is quite a long waiting period for any mass market car sold in the Indian market.

Meanwhile, once the hot car in the segment Jeep Compass has now almost zero waiting period in some places like Hyderabad and Surat and the mean waiting period for the SUV all over India is nearly half a month. The aberration seen in the waiting period for Jeep Compass comes from Coimbatore where an average prospective customer will have to wait for three long months to get their Jeep Compass delivered to them. As already mentioned, the waiting period on the Tata Harrier in Bangalore is 4 months while in places like Surat the waiting period is only a week, The waiting period on Tata Harrier in New Delhi is around 15 weeks and the same is three weeks in Mumbai and Kolkata.

Comparing the waiting period of Tata Harrier and Mahindra XUV500, one finds that the latter is more readily available in the markets and in places like Pune, Gurgaon, Kolkata, Chandigarh, Patna and Faridabad one can drive it off the dealership straightaway. The Mahindra XUV500 has a waiting period of 10 days in Bangalore and the same for Lucknow is 45 days. If one wants to buy a Mahindra XUV500 in Jaipur, Ahmedabad or Surat, the prospective customer will have to wait for 15 days while customers in Chennai, Indore and Coimbatore will have to wait for 21 days.

The large waiting period on Tata Harrier is the result of the SUV’s immense popularity in the Indian market and the fact that it is a relatively new car must also not be forgotten. As far as other options in the segment are concerned, Hyundai Tucson is not that popular in the market anymore and the same is reflected in the waiting period with the South Korean maker’s SUV’s waiting period ranging from 10 to 30 days. Other cars in segment like Tata Hexa have no waiting periods in Surat, Thane, Ahmedabad, Pune and Mumbai, but as one moves north to Noida and Ghaziabad the waiting period for Tata Hexa goes up to 3 months.
