Okinawa is one of the emerging EV start-ups in India with a plethora of products in its portfolio. The festive season is around the corner with Okinawa planning to launch their first electric bike in the Indian market, as told to us in an exclusive interaction by Mr. Jeetender Sharma, MD and Founder, Okinawa.  Named ‘Oki100’, the e-bike prototype was unveiled two years ago at the 2018 Auto Expo.

Currently, the Indian EV manufacturer retails 9 products in the market comprising of both lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries in the country. The Made-In-India Oki100 will mark the entry of Okinawa into the growing EV bikes segment. The price of Oki100 isn’t revealed as of now but expect it to be competitively priced below Rs 1 Lakh (Ex-showroom, India). Also in the pipeline is a new cruiser scooter launch in 2021.

As of now, Okinawa scooters are 92 percent localized but the new e-bike will be totally localized except for the battery cells. Bluetooth connectivity, LED lighting and single-channel ABS are the expected features. As per the manufacturer, the bike will have a range of around 150 kms on a single full charge. Talking about the performance, expect the e-bike to deliver the same results as a normal petrol-powered 125-150cc two-wheeler. The bike will deliver a top speed of 150 kms as per the manufacturer.

Recently, the world celebrated World EV Day on 9th September as citizens noticed the importance of sustainable development. India isn’t averse to EV adoption as new electric vehicles make its way to the market every now and then. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting people's lives, electric bikes are quietly becoming a popular mode of transportation. The rise in popularity of EV vehicles is partly due to the change in consumer behaviours and new friendly government norms.  Recently, the Delhi government announced a new Electric Vehicle policy.
