2021 Tata Safari launch on January 26 is the highlight of the new year. The iconic SUV is coming back after a hiatus of 2 years in a completely new avatar. Earlier it was given the name Gravitas, but Tata Motors surprised everyone by recently announcing its as Safari. Production has already commenced with expectations of it arriving at the dealerships later this month. Now, the homegrown automaker has released a teaser of the upcoming SUV on their social media channels. The new image reveals captain seats in the middle row which was expected considering it is a 7-seater SUV. Also, the Indian buyers will be able to book the new Safari in the coming days. It will be priced at a premium of Rs 1 lakh - Rs 3 lakh over the current Harrier model selling in the country. 2021 Tata Safari will compete against the likes of MG Hector Plus, upcoming Mahindra XUV 500, new Jeep Compass Facelift in the Indian market.

It was initially unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show under the name Buzzard before its showcase at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo with a codename of Gravitas. To cash on the popularity of the Safari badge, Tata Motors is bringing it back to the domestic market this year. 2021 Tata Safari will be based on the OMEGARC platform that is hugely influenced by Land Rover’s D8 platform. It will follow Tata’s Impact 2.0 Design Philosophy and will be positioned at the top of the automaker’s product line-up in the country.

Talking about the design, the SUV boasts of a huge chrome finished grille and LED headlamps with projector lens up front. It will ride on a set of dual-tone alloy wheels with flared wheel arches. Other key design highlights will include a glossy black tailgate, ‘Safari’ badge, wraparound LED taillights and a stepped roof. Dimension wise, the Safari SUV is 70 mm longer than Harrier while its wheelbase and width will remain the same as Harrier.

Moving on to the interior, the cabin sports Oyster White colour theme while the dashboard will come in an ash wood finish. We can expect the new Safari to come loaded with features like a semi-digital instrument console, 8.8-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, premium leather upholstery, wireless charging, automatic climate control among many others.

The 2021 Tata Safari SUV will be powered by a BS6 compliant Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine. This unit also powers the current 5-seater Harrier SUV. The powertrain is expected to deliver 168 bhp of maximum power output and 350 Nm of peak torque. Buyers can look forward to transmission options of a 6-speed manual gearbox and an optional 6-speed automatic torque converter. AWD (All Wheel Drive) will not be offered as of now but it could be provided in the near future.
