  • The Cyberster electric vehicle is the company’s first-ever electric roadster.
  • The two-door electric roadster can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.2 seconds.

MG Motor India showcased the new Cyberster electric roadster in India at an event held in Mumbai. The brand has confirmed that it will be unveiling new EVs in the domestic market in the coming time. At the event, JSW and MG Motor disclosed their plans for the Indian EV market. Both companies have formed a joint venture to roll out new models for their customers. The joint venture is now known as JSW MG Motor India.

The Cyberster EV is the company’s first-ever electric roadster, and it is likely to hit international markets later this year. The electric sports car was first revealed as a prototype in 2021, while the production model of the Cyberster electric was showcased at Auto Shanghai in April last year. The MG Cyberster features sweptback headlamps, a sleek nose, prominent air intakes, a contoured bumper, and a splitter. The EV houses electronically operated scissor doors that are complemented by a folding soft-top roof hidden behind roll bars.

The cabin boasts leather upholstery, soft-touch materials, and a central unit that features the digital instrument cluster and infotainment display. In addition, the central console has gear selector controls and conventional buttons. The yoke-style steering wheel equipped in the production model has been replaced, and it now has a flat-bottomed wheel featuring paddle shifters, aluminum spokes, and several buttons.

Under the bonnet, the Cyberster is powered by a 77-kWh battery set with two e-motors located on each axle. The unit churns out a power output of 528 bhp and a peak torque of 725 Nm. The two-door electric roadster can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.2 seconds. It also has a maximum range of 580 km on one charge.

The new joint venture formed between JSW and MG is all set to benefit from the country’s new EV policy. The recently implemented electric vehicle policy offers lower import duty rates to new entrants who invest at least USD 500 million in the EV sector. This breakthrough opens the door for high-end versions like the Cyberster to be released in India.

MG is also planning to expand the production capacity of its facility located in Halol, Gujarat. The brand announced that it will focus on the production of PHEVs and BEVs in India. MG aims to increase its yearly production capacity from 1 lakh plus vehicles to 3 lakh vehicles.
