Maruti Suzuki Alto has become the first car in India to cross the sales milestone of 40 Lakh units. It has been the country's best-selling car for 16 consecutive years and nearly 76 percent of Indian car buyers preferred it as their first car. Maruti Alto has been the country’s first small hatchback to come with BS6 compliant petrol engine while it was also upgraded to comply with the latest crash and pedestrian safety norms. The small hatchback offers a fuel efficiency of 22.05kmpl for petrol and 31.56 km/kg for CNG variants in the country.

Speaking on the success, Mr. Shashank Srivastava, Executive Director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “Alto has been ranked as the No.1 selling car in India for 16th year in a row and we are immensely proud to announce another remarkable milestone of 40 lakh cumulative sales. This has become a sales record never achieved by any other Indian car. Over the years, brand Alto has established a strong emotional connect with our customers and has become a strong symbol of Pride. We would like to dedicate this achievement to all our proud and happy Alto family members who have trusted and supported us in this journey to become India’s Favourite Car.”

Being originally launched in 2000, it took the Alto nearly eight years to achieve the initial one million sales landmark. However, the next three million units were added in a span of four years each. The BS6 Maruti Alto price starts at Rs 2.94 Lakhs while the top-end variant comes at Rs 4.36 Lakhs (Both prices are Ex. Showroom, Delhi). The small hatchback is available in a total of eight variants: STD, STD (O), LXI, LXI (O), VXI, VXI+, LXI CNG and LXI (O) CNG. It directly takes on the likes of Renault Kwid and Datsun redi-Go in the Indian market. Maruti Alto comes with Driver side airbag, ABS with EBD, Speed alert system, Reverse parking sensor and Seat-belt reminder system as standard safety features.
