  • Hyundai AX1 micro SUV to make debut in concept form at 2022 Auto Expo
  • Hyundai AX will be similar to the Hyundai i10 hatchback in terms of dimensions
  • The upcoming mini-SUV will be developed under Hyundai’s ‘Small EV Project’

Hyundai Motor Company has been working on a low-cost small SUV codenamed AX1 for quite some time now. This electric mini-SUV is being developed under the company’s ‘Small EV project’. Furthermore, the AX1 micro SUV is likely to make its debut in the concept form at the 2022 Auto Expo. Recently, it was spied wearing heavy camouflage on the South Korean roads.

We can expect the Hyundai AX1 to be based on the K1 platform which also underpins the new generation Santro. From the spy images, we can clearly see that the micro-SUV will get a triangular mesh grille upfront along with two-tier headlamps, similar to the ones present in the Venue. The images also reveal that the new Hyundai electric mini SUV will ride on newly-designed 6-spoke alloy wheels shod on low-profile tyres. The rear door handles are positioned on the C-pillar. Design elements such as the curved front window frame and steeply sloping rear windshield give it a futuristic look. Furthermore, Hyundai AX also gets an upright stance similar to the typical SUVs. In terms of dimensions, it is likely to be the same as the Hyundai i10 hatchback. Nothing about the interior features have been revealed yet. However, we can expect Hyundai to equip the electric mini-SUV with a plethora of premium features.

As for the engine specifications, it is quite early to comment. However, if rumors are to be believed, then AX1 could be powered by a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a turbocharged unit with the similar displacement. Talking about the transmission options, the engines might get both the manual and AMT gearboxes.

In the Indian market, the mini-SUV will compete against the likes of Maruti S-Presso and the upcoming Tata HBX. We can expect the India launch to happen by mid of 2023. Also, the expected price is likely to be around Rs 4 Lakhs while the all-electric version could be priced around Rs 10 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
