The Indian Government in a major relief to the motorists extended the validity of driving licenses and vehicle documents till the 31st of December 2020. This decision comes in the wake of the ongoing Coronavirus Pandemic. As per the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways, vehicle documents which expired on 1st February this year or maybe expiring anytime before 30th December 2020. All these will now be valid till 31st December 2020

Earlier this year on March 30th, the Ministry announced that validity of fitness, permit (all types), driving license, registration or any other concerned document was extended up to June 30th, 2020. Again, the Ministry extended the validity of the motor vehicle documents until September 30th. The extensions were in light of severe debilitating effects of COVID-19

A statement released by the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways on Monday said that the government has extended the fitness, permit, license, registration and other documents validity under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989 till the 31st of December, 2020.

"Taking into consideration the situation still continuing due to conditions for prevention of the spread of Covid-19 across the country, it has further advised that the validity of all of the above-referred documents whose extension of validity could not or not likely be granted due to lockdown and which had expired since 1st of Feb, 2020 or would expire by 31st Dec 2020, the same may be treated to be valid till 31st of December 2020," the statement said.

It further added that the different enforcement agencies in India are issued an advisory to treat all documents as valid till the end of the year. This step will be welcomed by the Indian citizens in the current environment due to the severity of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
