Bimota shuts down its factory

Bimota was famous for making some of the world’s most exotic looking bikes. They included wild and hi-tech motorcycles, however, after going through many ups and downs over the years, the company has decided to call it quits. Bimota has finally shuttered its factory in Giaccaglia.

Originally formed back in 1973 by Valerio Bianchi, Giuseppe Morri, and the legendary motorcycle designer Massimo Tamburini, the company got its name from the first two letters of each founder’s surname.

Trouble for Bimota started after Tamburini was forced out of the company by Morri. Tamburini went on to design iconic bikes such as the MV Agusta F4 and the Ducati 916. After he left, the company was reeling – it was unable to source only the engines from Japanese motorcycle makers, and instead required to buy inventories of full built motorcycles just to use their engines.

Over the years, the company changed hands many times, but now, the factory, where it manufactured its incredible machines, has been shut. The current owners will offer spare parts of all the latest Bimota models for now, they have chosen to store them in a warehouse nearby. All the components required for making bikes for the next few months will now be manufactured from Lugano in Switzerland, where the company’s current owners operate from.

The company will continue to offer support to current owners as much as they can - some new customers have also received their bikes from Switzerland.
