Piaggio & C. SpA is an Italian manufacturer and the parent company of Vespa. The company was founded in the year 1884 by Rinaldo Piaggio and has its headquarters in Pontedera, Italy. It was initially started as locomotive and railway carriage manufacturing company. The company changed its operations to building war vehicles during the world war. In the year 1940, Piaggio introduced Vespa in Italy as an affordable means of transport.
Piaggio entered the Indian market in the year 1985 and introduced Vespa in collaboration with Bajaj motors. Due to the iconic paint and superior features, Vespa soon became popular with skyrocketing sales. In 1999, the company withdrew from the Indian market and then re-entered in the year 2016.
