The auto giant is planning to manufacture around 2,000 units of the hydrogen fuel-cell CR-V every year.

Honda Cars has unveiled the hydrogen-powered concept of its CR-V SUV. The Japanese auto giant shared a teaser of the new crossover. The hydrogen-powered CR-V SUV is seen covered in blue camouflage with hydrogen written on it. The test mule can run on both electricity and hydrogen fuel since it is equipped with a battery pack and hydrogen fuel cell. The automaker is anticipated to launch the new CR-V with hydrogen fuel cell technology in Japan and the United States this year.

The CR-V FCEV comes equipped with a medium-capacity battery set and a fuel cell powered by hydrogen. The battery set will allow the CR-V SUV to run entirely on electricity without using its fuel cell. This SUV's plug-in hybrid variant uses a 17.7 kWh battery that enables it to go about 81 kilometers on electricity mode.

Additionally, the manufacturer has also disclosed that the battery would enable it to have vehicle-to-load (V2L) capacity, meaning it will be able to supply electricity to other devices. In terms of design, the new CR-V hydrogen is a little different from the outgoing CR-V SUVs available in global markets. The test mule gets a new set of taillights and a charging port fixed on the left-side front fender.

Honda is planning to manufacture around 2,000 units of the hydrogen fuel-cell CR-V every year. The upcoming CR-V SUV is likely to replace the Honda Clarity. The carmaker discontinued Clarity in 2021. Honda had previously promoted hydrogen fuel cells as a greener alternative fuel option. The fuel cell system will have twice the durability, and it will be less expensive to develop, said the manufacturer.
