Tata Motors had showcased the Tata Gravitas 7-seater SUV at the 2020 Auto Expo in February in a production-ready avatar. It was expected to launch in the second quarter of this year but it was postponed due to the nationwide lockdown because of COVID-19. Since in the fourth phase of lockdown, the Government has provided several relaxations to various businesses in order to open up the economic activities, Tata Gravitas was spied as a test mule on Chennai-Bangalore highway after a very long time.
Going by the spy-shots, the test mule was riding on 6-spoke steel wheels which appeared very small in size too, say around 15-inch. However, it seems highly unlikely that they would make their way in the final production version of the SUV even with the entry-level grades. The Gravitas is essentially a stretched version of Harrier with an extra row of seating for two occupants. Currently, the Hexa is not on the sale after the BS6 emission norms so it can be a potential replacement for the Hexa crossover. Tata has christened it as 'Buzzard' in the global markets while the Harrier has been named as 'Buzzard Sport'. Tata Gravitas rivals in India will be Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming MG Hector Plus.
Mechanically, Tata Gravitas would be sharing several elements with the Harrier, predominantly the engine and transmission. It will have the same BS6 compliant Fiat-sourced 2.0L 4-cylinder Kyrotech diesel engine which generates maximum power of 168bhp and peak torque of 350Nm with the Harrier. The power and torque figures, more or less, are likely to be the same with the Gravitas. The gearbox options would be a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic unit while it is not confirmed yet whether there will be an AWD system on offer or not. Meanwhile, in other news, Tata Motors is planning to introduce a petrol-powered version of Harrier with an upsized (1.5L) version of Nexon's 1.2L turbocharged unit.
