Yamaha bikes in India have been crowd favourites since its launch back in 1985 which is nearly three and a half decades back in 1985 in a joint venture. However, many years later, it became a fully-owned subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd, Japan (YMC). A few more years later, Mitsui & Co. Ltd. joined hands with Yamaha in order to become a joint-investor in India Yamaha Motor Private Limited (IYM). YMC, the parent organization in Japan, has two wholly-owned subsidiaries in India in the form of Yamaha Motor India Pvt. Ltd. (YMI) and Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. (YMIS). The former functions as the regional headquarters and corporate control body of India business operations for YMC while the latter supports IYM to market and sell its motorcycles & scooters in domestic as well as export markets. Yamaha has also set up Yamaha Motor Research & Development India Pvt. Ltd. (YMRI), a 100 per cent subsidiary of YMC Japan, established to provide R&D and Product development services to IYM for its domestic as well as export markets. The company already has four overseas R&D headquarters in various parts of the world such as Italy, Taiwan, China, and Thailand.
Yamaha has three state-of-the-art production facilities in India at Surajpur (Uttar Pradesh), Faridabad (Haryana), and Kanchipuram (Tamil Nadu). It has a decent sales network across the country with 2200 customer touch-points including 500 dealers. Presently, Mr Motofumi Shitara is the Chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group. He is also the Managing Director of both Yamaha Motor India and Yamaha Motor India Sales. Furthermore, Mr Hirokazu Yoshimitsu is the Director at Yamaha Motor India Sales.
