The largest carmaker of Indian market, Maruti Suzuki brought the much-awaited generation update for WagonR early on in this year and launched the updated WagonR in India. Ever since its launch, the tall-boy hatch from the maker has been performing good in the Indian market. This good performance at a time when not just Maruti Suzuki, but the entire auto industry is going through an extended period of sales decline in the country. Now the latest sales figures reveal that the latest model of WagonR has outsold vehicle like the Alto and Dzire for the month of July. To put things in perspective, Maruti Suzuki still rules the sales in India as 7 out of top 10 selling cars in India are Maruti cars.
Talking numbers, the sales figures for Maruti Suzuki WagonR for the month of July 2019 stood at 15,062 while other models of the brand like Dzire came in at second spot with a figure of 12,923 and Swift came in third at 12,677. The fourth spot was also claimed by a Maruti with the Alto bringing in a figure of 11,577. This is slightly uncharacteristic for the Alto hatchback as being an entry level model, the Alto has traditionally sold more units than either of the models mentioned above. Alto was also recently refreshed in the market with safety features, but the fact that WagonR got a full model replacement only in January this year may have tipped the scales. Another factor for rise in WagonR sales could have been the introduction of the CNG version for the latest model of WagonR> CNG being an affordable fuel option in larger cities tends to attract a large number of customers, both from private car market and cab market.
The new Maruti Suzuki WagonR comes with the option of a 1L, 3-cylinder petrol engine rated to produce 68 PS and 90 Nm, which is the same engine offered on the previous generation of the car. However, the major update was the introduction of the option of larger 1.2L, 4-cylinder petrol engine option on the new WagonR, this new engine is rated to deliver 82 Bhp and 113 Nm. While the more powerful engine comes with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 5 speed AMT, the older engine comes only with a 5-speed manual as standard.
Maruti also recently launched the CNG-petrol model of the new WagonR, the CNG kit on the car is a dealer level upgrade. However, the CNG fitting in only available with the smaller 1L engine. Talking of the updates on the newer model of Maruti WagonR, the safety features are in tune with the BNVSAP norms and come with a driver side airbag, ABS, reverse parking sensors, seat belt reminder for driver and front passenger, and speed alert as standard. The launch of the updated model also saw the prices of the car going up slightly and the new WagonR’s prices now start at Rs. 4.29 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi. However, the sales figures tell that customers feel the higher price tag is justified.
