Electric powertrains could be offered along with conventional turbocharged four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines.

Though not much was known about the new VW Touareg, we know that the car will sit above the Tiguan in international markets. The Touareg also borrows many of its aspects from the Tiguan, such as its overall design. It will also sit above the Atlas in Volkswagen’s Chinese and American line-ups. A new image of the car without any camouflage was released online and has revealed more about the look and feel of the car than was previously known. The car was previewed as a new concept at the Beijing motor show last year.

The larger front grille and angular headlights give the car a leaner look. In fact, the focus of the design seems to be more aggressive - with a defined crease along the doors and various nips and tucks all over, thus stepping away from the rounder look of the outgoing model. This light design is said to be inspired by the Tiguan. The Toureg looks similar to the Atlas as well, albeit with a shorter wheelbase and larger front grille. The concept that debuted in Berlin came with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that produced 386hp and 700NM of torque. The system could run in full-electric mode for up to 80km. VW could offer a hybrid version of this car alongside more conventional turbocharged four-cylinder diesel and petrol units.

The interiors come with a 15-inch touchscreen at the dashboard equipped with the latest tech from the carmaker. VW has also managed to make the car much roomier by lowering the seats and ensuring ample headspace. A release date has not been confirmed yet but the car is expected to hit international markets later this year.
