Electric Vehicles aren't a novelty anymore as they are becoming quite a popular mode of commutation for the consumers. Over the past few years, we have observed a rising number of EVs arriving in the Indian market from the major automakers. With an improvement in the EV infrastructure, we can expect more and more Indian consumers opting for the eco-friendly electric vehicles. Mahindra & Mahindra has some ambitious plans for the Indian market with three new launches planned in the 2020-2021 financial year.
One of the expected launches is the Mahindra Atom. It is an electric quadricycle which is expected to arrive in the Indian market by the last quarter of 2020-2021. Mahindra Electric recently released a teaser video showcasing essential features of the Atom. The Indian automaker divulged some information about the small electric car like extra interior space with increasing comfort and easy luggage loading. It will have a high roofline that could generate a lot of space in the cabin. The large glass area and bigger windscreen would give an airy feel to the occupants.
Showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo, key design highlights of Mahindra Atom are the reflector strips at both rear and front bumper, large windshield, clear-lens headlamps, bold side creases and triple-pod taillamps. The Atom EV comes in a 2-door configuration and four passengers including the driver can be accommodated inside the quadricycle. The front row has one seat and a bench seat at the rear.
Mahindra Atom is going to be powered by a 15KW electric motor and Li-Ion battery pack. The production-ready model would be equipped with a swappable battery pack housed at the rear. The electric quadricycle can clock a top speed of 70 kmph and will take around 4 hours to get fully charged. The USP will be the advanced thermal management system for batteries. When launched, it will be the first electric quadricycle in India. Mahindra Atom will compete against Bajaj Qute in the Indian EV market. The quadricycle is expected to be priced around Rs 3 Lakhs (Ex-Showroom). The company will be manufacturing the Electric Quadricycle at the Hyderabad production plant.
