While the Nano was launched with a lot of hopes and aspirations, and was also hailed to be a game changer for the Indian market, Tata Motors did not find any success with the model, and it was considered a failure before the project was shutdown altogether. After that the brand also saw one of the greatest comebacks in the industry in the form of their new Tiago hatchback. This little hatchback has since remained the highest selling car by the company ever year. Looking at the success of Tiago, Tata is now considering to lock horns with Renault Kwid and Alto 800 by launching its own small hatchback in the market. Now the details of this plan are not out yet, but the top honcho of Tata Motors Guenter Butschek said:
There is still some market volume (in the segment) below the Tiago and Tigor, where we don’t have a dominant play today – but where we would like to have a play. Where we in particular see great opportunities for us as far as electrification and the concept of urban mobility is concerned.
Tata never has had a significant presence in the segment below Tiago so far, now as the maker has already declared the intention of only using the Alfa platform for smaller sized cars, it could very well be the case that the future small hatchback from the company could be based on the Alfa platform. The platform which will debut with Altroz premium hatchback in India, and will also form the nderpinnings of the Tiago and Tigor in the future. Another thing to be noted here is that Alfa as well the platform for bigger cars, Omega, both have been designed while keeping the electrification of vehicles in mind. Now as the plan for the smaller hatchback to be built on Alfa platform is concerned, there could be a chance that Tata Motors launches their new small hatchback in an electric avatar as well.
As you must have noticed in the Tata Motors CEO’s statement above, he stated that there are chances that the next small hatchback could also be an electric car. Tata is already laying special emphasis on the electric cars in India, with the maker already showing off the electric version of Altroz premium hatchback in Geneva Motor Show 2019.
The urge to launch a small hatchback is not just to regain the market share in India, but to also move mass amount of cars that has traditionally been dominated by MSIL. If the work on the new small hatchback from Tata commences, it could very well be made with a tall-boy frame in mind. The new hatchback will take on Maruti Suzuki Alto, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Renault Kwid, Datsun redi-GO, and the Hyundai Santro in the market.
