Tata Tiago CNG and Tata Tigor CNG launch was delayed due to COVID-19 and global shortage of semiconductor chips

Tata Motors is all set to launch the CNG version of the Tiago hatchback and Tigor sedan in January 2022 in the Indian market. It has been learnt that a few company dealers have even started accepting bookings for the Tiago CNG and Tigor CNG. The home-grown automaker has been trying to enter the CNG segment for quite some time but COVID-19 and global shortage of semiconductor chips played the spoilsport. Presently, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai are the only major players dominating the CNG fuel segment in India.

Tata Tiago CNG and Tata Tigor CNG have been spotted testing several times on the roads, albeit with camouflage. Sources have confirmed that the CNG duo will be identical to their petrol counterparts in terms of styling. However, it is still not known which of the grades of the hatch and sedan will get the CNG kit. In all likelihood, the mid-level or the top-end variant will be offered with a factory-fitted CNG. As evident, the petrol-powered version of the duo comes with multiple premium features such as the automatic climate control and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. Tata Tiago CNG will directly rival Maruti Wagon R CNG and Hyundai Santro CNG while Tata Tigor CNG will lock horns with Hyundai Aura CNG.

Presently, Tata Tiago and Tata Tigor are powered by a 1.2L 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine which produces maximum power output of 86 bhp and highest torque delivery of 113 Nm. The CNG variants will retain the same engine but the power and torque figures could be a bit less than their petrol counterparts. Though the petrol version is offered with both manual and AMT gearbox options, we expect the CNG fueled hatch and sedan to get only manual gearbox. The company might well add a CNG badge at the bootlid in order to distinguish them from the standard versions. One point worth noting here is that post the launch of the CNG version, Tata Tigor will be the only vehicle in India to come with petrol, CNG and all-electric versions.
