Tata Safari is the name on everyone’s lips since it was unveiled on Republic Day, January 26, 2021. The SUV has started arriving at the dealerships ahead of the official launch on February 22, 2021. Indian customers can pre-book the iconic SUV at a token amount of Rs 30,000. Its price will be disclosed on the launch with expectations of the base variant starting from Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Tata Safari Storme was discontinued in 2019 and now the SUV is coming back in a completely new avatar. As we await the official introduction of the SUV, another interesting news has come our way. A test mule of Tata Safari Storme was spotted recently testing in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. This is quite interesting considering the manufacturer had stopped production of the SUV.
The vehicle was spotted testing near TELCO (Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company) facility. TELCO essentially develops and produces components for Tata Motor’s passenger cars. Tata Safari Storme coming back into production would be a piece of huge news considering there has been no speculation regarding its comeback. As we already know, Tata Motors produces Safari Storme for the Indian Army. As per an agreement signed, the Indian automaker must deliver 3192 units of the Army-spec Safari Storme to the Indian Armed Forces. Tata claims that the Army-spec Safari Storme's payload capacity is 60 percent more than the standard model which has been discontinued for now. No power performance specifications were disclosed but the homegrown manufacturer claims that the army-spec delivers 70 percent more power and 200 percent higher torque than the model sold to the civilians. Since 1958, Tata Motors has supplied over 1.5 lakh vehicles to the armed forces.
The discontinued Tata Safari Storme was known for its performance. That said, the hardcore SUV used to come powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that delivered 154 bhp of maximum power output and 400Nm of peak torque. The powertrain came mated to a 6-speed manual transmission.
