Tata Motors has surprised everyone with the recent announcement regarding the comeback of Safari. The iconic SUV will come in the form of a seven-seater with the launch slated for January 26, 2020, in the Indian market. Earlier named as Gravitas, it will now come with a Safari badge. As the launch date draws closer, Tata Motors is believed to have started the production of Safari SUV. This all comes to light thanks to spied images of the vehicle seen on the production line alongside Tata Altroz.
The first Safari was introduced back in 1998 before getting discontinued in 2018. Now, it will come in a completely new avatar based on IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy with a set of exciting features. Tata Safari would be priced at a premium of Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.3 lakh in comparison to the Harrier. Expect Safari to retail at Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom), it will rival the likes of upcoming New-Gen Mahindra XUV 500, Jeep Compass Facelift and MG Hector Plus.
The upcoming Tata Safari will be quite similar to the Harrier as it is based on the same OMEGA architecture. Safari measures 63mm and 80mm more than the Harrier in length and height. The width and wheelbase remain the same as the 5-seater SUV which stand at 1,894mm and 2,741mm respectively. Distinguishing Safari from Harrier is the new colour schemes, upright tail, new set of alloy wheels plus the steeped roof.
Moving to the interior, the cabin will come in both 7-seater and 6-seater layouts. The dashboard design will remain more or less the same. Infact the features on-board will be carried over such as an 8.8-inch infotainment system with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 9 JBL speaker sound system, steering mounted controls, 7-inch TFT display instrument cluster among many others. Also, expect safety equipment like 6 airbags, ESP, ABD with EA, hill hold control, hill hold descent, rear parking sensors and cameras.
Talking about the performance, Tata Safari would be powered by a 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine seen on Harrier. It will belt out 168 bhp of maximum power output and 350 Nm of peak torque. The engine will be paired to a 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmissions. As of now, do not expect a 4-wheel drive system in the offering. Don’t lose hope as the manufacturer has stated that Safari’s platform can support 4X4 as well as electrification. It could come depending upon the market’s needs and demands in the near future.
