Tata Altroz Lead Car of Mumbai Marathon

Indian automaker Tata first unveiled the new Altroz hatchback as the 45X concept at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. In the beginning of 2019, it was again put on display in its near-production stage during the Geneva Motor Show. Some reports suggest that the company plans to launch this much-awaited premium hatchback during the Diwali festive season in 2019. In some fresh news, Tata has now declared that the Altroz will be the lead car for the Mumbai Marathon that will be held on 19 January 2020. Bear in mind that the lead car for the annual marathon in 2019 was the Harrier SUV which was later launched on 23 January.

Coming to Altroz, this is all set to be the first car by Tata in the premium hatchback category in India. Some industry experts say that the car is expected to come loaded with features to lure first-time buyers. The upcoming car has been spotted during tests on several occasions and a lot of information about the vehicle is out in public domain. Talking about exteriors, it gets a stylish design based on the lines of the IMPACT 2.0 design of Tata. The front-end will get split headlamps and a large but sleek grille while the rear-end gets sharp-looking tail lamps with black cladding.

As for the the interiors, the Altroz will feature a floating touchscreen infotainment console mounted on top of the dashboard. It will also have a digital instrument cluster, flat-bottomed steering wheel, high-end stereo system, rear AC vents, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, and cruise control among others. The interiors are expected to be spacious too with comfortable seats and ample boot space. Tata will offer the Altroz hatchback in petrol and diesel engine options.

The petrol engine could the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder unit in use right now on the Tata Nexon but will get a slightly different power-torque tuning. The diesel engine is also expected to be the one found on Nexon. This 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel motor will also be detuned for Altroz to provide more fuel economy. A 6-speed manual gearbox is likely to be standard with these engines while a DCT box is also expected to be present on the car, though it could be introduced at a later stage.

On its launch, the Tata Altroz will challenge Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz, Toyota Glanza, and Hyundai Elite i20 in the premium hatchback segment. Though nothing is known about the pricing of the car yet, Tata is likely to position the Altroz at a very competitive price tag. Apart from Altroz, Tata is also working on the electric version of this car that will be launched in India in 2020.
