  • The MQB AO global platform to be used for entry-level models of Skoda and VW
  • Skoda to recruit highly qualified employees for technical development

Skoda Auto has made an announcement that it has taken on the global responsibility of developing MQB AO platform-based models for the Volkswagen group. This will further be used by both automakers - Skoda and VW, to develop new entry-level models for India, Russia, Africa, the ASEAN countries, and Latin America.

The Czech automaker was responsible for the development of the India-specific MQB A0 IN. Along with the localized platform, Skoda formed a key part of the VW Group’s India 2.0 plan. Skoda Kushaq, which was launched earlier this year, was the first model to use this new platform. Following this was Volkswagen Taigun. Besides this, there are two more models currently in the works. Having said this, Skoda’s version, badged the Slavia, is all set to debut by end of this year. While the Volkswagen derivative will arrive next year.

“By assuming responsibility for the MQB-A0 Global Platform, ŠKODA AUTO is in charge of the worldwide development of a platform for the first time. We are applying our development expertise, taking on even more responsibility within the Volkswagen Group and at the same time strengthening ŠKODA AUTO’s headquarters as an important European development centre for the Group. I am convinced that we will be able to win over many new customers thanks to the MQB-A0 Global Platform and bolster the Group’s position in the entry-level segments,” as commented by Thomas Schäfer, ŠKODA AUTO CEO.

Skoda Auto requires highly qualified employees, especially in the area of technical development, for the MQB AO Global platform. The automaker plans to transfer some of the employees to the project from other positions. However, the majority of them will be newly recruited. Skoda aims to create an important prerequisite in order to become the leading European carmaker in the growth markets of India, Russia, and North Africa. This is being done as a part of Skoda’s next level – Škoda Strategy 2030.

“Through our comprehensive platform strategy, we achieve economies of scale that enable us to offer our customers worldwide state-of-the-art technology and high quality at competitive prices. Based on this, the Group’s volume brands – Volkswagen and ŠKODA – can quickly deliver products to customers that are unique in the volume segment. As a brand with significant expertise in entry-level mobility, ŠKODA is ideally positioned to assume worldwide responsibility for the successful further development of the MQB-A0 Global Platform within the Volkswagen Group. This way, we are creating synergies that will further increase profitability within the volume group,” as commented by Ralf Brandstätter, Chairman of the Board of Management at Volkswagen.
