Renault India toying with the idea of either Kiger EV or Triber EV launch in 2021

Renault India is bullish about its prospects in the fast-growing Indian market. A few days back, it unveiled the Kiger Concept globally with expectations of India launch in the first quarter of 2021. The upcoming sub-compact SUV would be 80 percent similar to the unveiled concept. Now, according to a media report that quotes Venkatram Mamillapalle, CEO and Managing Director, Renault (India) as saying that the company is thinking about an EV launch in the country. He said it is technically possible to build either the Kiger EV or Triber EV for the domestic market. The MD mentioned it is quite possible as one has to simply work on the chassis and the floor of the vehicle. If launched, the all-electric Renault Kiger would rival the likes of Tata Nexon EV and upcoming models like Mahindra eKUV100 and Tata Altorz EV in its segment. According to the company representative, if the Renault Kiger EV arrives in India, it will be more affordable in comparison to Tata Nexon EV which retails at a starting price of Rs 13.99 lakhs (ex-showroom), India.

The upcoming subcompact is based on Renault-Nissan-Mistubishi CMF-A platform that has helped the manufacturer is reducing costs considerably. The French automaker is already retailing Kwid EV in the international market based on the CMF-A platform so it wouldn’t be much of a technical hassle for the manufacturer to launch an EV model here. In comparison to Kwid EV, the all-electric Kiger would be wider, longer with high ground clearance. These factors would help the company to provide a bigger battery pack with Kiger EV. It is also being said that Kiger EV could easily cross 300 kms range on a single charge as the current Kwid EV on sale delivers a distance of 271 kms on a single charge with a battery pack of 26.8 kWh.

Renault Kiger was earlier scheduled to arrive in the country by this year-end but COVID-19 pandemic has delayed it to 2021 now. With the spied images of the production model and the concept car being unveiling, we can confirm that the up-coming subcompact SUV will come in a coupe-like appearance. It will sport LED headlights, c-shaped taillamps, LED turn indicators and a sculpted bonnet. Once launched, Renault Kiger would rival Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Toyota Urban Cruiser newly-launched Kia Sonet and upcoming Nissan Magnite in its category.
