Next-Gen Maruti Alto

News Highlights

  • The next-gen Maruti Alto to get a redesigned front fascia.
  • The upcoming hatchback to get the existing 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine.
  • 2022 Alto to be based on the new lightweight Heartect platform.

Maruti Suzuki was planning to introduce the next-generation Alto (codenamed YOM) in the second half of 2021. According to a new media report, the launch has been pushed further to mid-2022. The exact reason behind the delay is still not known. However, it is being assumed that due to the Covid-19 situation in the country, the launch has been postponed.

The hatchback has been spotted doing test runs on multiple occasions in the past. The spy images reveal that the hatchback is in its current stage of development. It will be based on the new lightweight Heartect platform which also underpins the new S-Presso and the Wagon R. Moving on, the new-gen Alto is likely to retain the overall profile. However, it will come with subtle design changes in terms of a more prominent grille, new headlamps, and mew tail-lamp clusters. The hatchback will also feature short overhangs at the front and towards the rear.

Dimensionally, we can expect the 2022 Maruti Alto to grow in size, This will further create more space inside the cabin of the hatchback. Furthermore, the new model is also likely to get a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity. The safety kit will consist of dual airbags, driver & co-passenger seat belt reminder, ABS with EBD, reverse parking sensors, and a speed alert system.

Performance-wise, we can expect the next-gen Alto to be powered by the existing 796cc, 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine. In the present state, the motor churns out a maximum power of 47 bhp and a peak torque of 69 Nm while being mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The engine comes with a factory-fitted CNG kit. We can also expect it to feature Suzuki’s Smart Hybrid tech. Details for the same are still not known.
