Mumbai Local Train Services Resume From Today

Mumbai local train service has resumed from today after almost three months amidst the lockdown due to Coronavirus pandemic. The Western Railway shared this information via its official Twitter handle. Presently, the mainline and Harbour line of Mumbai local have been opened by the Maharasthra government but general people won't be able to travel as it is limited to just ‘essential staff’ of the state government. Only 700 people will be allowed per train as opposed to the original capacity of 1200 individuals per train.

“Western Railway have decided to resume their selected suburban services over WR w.e.f. Monday, 15th June, 2020 with defined protocol & SOP, only for movement of essential staff as identified by the State Government,” the Western Railway tweeted. Nearly 73 pairs of trains will run on a daily basis with 8 pairs specifically between Virar and Dahanu Road. "Maximum services will run between Churchgate and Virar, but few will also run up to Dahanu Road," the railways said. The timings have been specified as 05:30 AM for the resumption of services while the last train will depart before 11:30 PM, with a frequency of 15 minutes between each train. Besides the Western Railways, the Central Railways has also recommenced the EMU services for essential staff of the state government.

The Uddhav Thackeray led Maharashtra government has already identified approx 1.25 Lakh essential staff and they will be allowed to board the train only after showing their ID card. After showing the government approved ID card, the individuals can buy the tickets from the booking window while the seasonal passes will also remain valid even if they have crossed their validity date. The state government as well as the Ministry of Railways, which comes under the Union Government of India, will have multiple rounds of check to make sure that only 'essential staff' boards the train. The Railways has also ordered strict imposition of "no hawker and no parking zone" in station circulating area at 150 meters radius.
