MG Motor India has announced the launch of Hector CVT as February 11, 2021 in the country. The 2021 MG Hector was launched last month in the Indian market, albeit with a DCT gearbox. Now, the British brand is expanding the variant line-up by adding a couple of automatic variants. It has been learnt that the CVT unit will be offered with the two top-end variants. MG Hector CVT will take on the likes of Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Nissan Kicks in India while it is expected to retail at a price tag of Rs 17-18 lakhs (ex-showroom).

MG Hector is presently available with a 6-speed manual and a DCT automatic gearbox. According to MG dealers, the CVT variants will be sold alongside the DCT and manual trims. Some dealers, on the condition of anonymity, further elaborated that the company will market CVT variants as city-friendly due to their higher mileage while the DCT variants will be aimed at buyers who are looking for highway driving as it could be jerky during thick city traffic at lower speeds. For those asking, Wuling Almaz SUV - based on the Hector - is already sold with a CVT unit in the Indoensian market. The company is not expected to make any cosmetic or mechanical updates in the SUV.

Mechanically, the 2021 MG Hector CVT will be powered by the same 1.5litre turbocharged petrol engine. It will be the first vehicle in its segment to offer two automatic gearbox options. The company might offer the CVT gearbox with the Super and Sharp trims as they are the range-topping variants in the Hector lineup. The CVT variants are believed to be highly fuel efficient as compared to their DCT counterparts.
