Mercedes-Benz’s new 2.0-litre diesel engine will make its Indian debut in the recently launched E-class.

The new E 220d version will launch on June 2, 2017 and will debut Mercedes’ new 2.0-litre diesel engine in India. The new, modular 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine has already replaced the older 2.1-litre unit globally. The motor makes 194hp and 400Nm of torque and comes paired to a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The company has been hard at work re-engineering the engine to run on BS-IV fuel (the new motor was originally developed to conform to Euro VI norms).

This car is the second diesel-engined car in the E-class’ line-up in India. The E-class was launched with a 258hp, V6 diesel in February 2017. Expect pricing for the E 220d to be closer to the E 200 petrol and in the region of ₹57-58 lakh (ex-showroom). The lower price point when compared to the larger E 350d is sure to draw buyers looking for a diesel E-class.

The new diesel engine will work its way into other Mercedes models in the coming years too. Mercedes-Benz was among the manufacturers worst hit by the ban on diesel cars with engines larger than 2000cc.
