Mercedes Benz has announced its plans of going all-electric by 2030. The German luxury automaker announced that all the new platforms will be only electric from 2025 onwards. In fact, it has stated that the three new architectures unveiling in 2025 will be all-electric. The brand will install battery cell capacity of more than 200 Gigawatt hours with partners and it has planned eight such Gigafactories for this purpose. The infrastructure of Mercedes me Charge will be ramped up to ensure more than 530,000 AC and DC charging points worldwide.
Mercedes Benz intends to have battery electric vehicles (BEV) in all the segments where it has a presence by next year. By 2025, the buyers can select an all-electric alternative for every model the company makes. “The EV shift is picking up speed - especially in the luxury segment, where Mercedes-Benz belongs. The tipping point is getting closer and we will be ready as markets switch to electric-only by the end of this decade,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG. “This step marks a profound reallocation of capital. By managing this faster transformation while safeguarding our profitability targets, we will ensure the enduring success of Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to our highly qualified and motivated workforce, I am convinced that we will be successful in this exciting new era.”
Mercedes Benz aims to invest over €40 billion in the development of battery electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030. The three all-electric architectures planned for 2025 are named as MB.EA, AMG.EA and VAN.EA. The MB.EA will cover all medium to large size passenger cars while acting as the electric backbone for the future EV portfolio. The AMG.EA will serve as a dedicated performance electric vehicle platform for the high-performance AMG products in the company's portfolio. Last but not the least, the VAN.EA platform will be specifically for electric vans and Light Commercial Vehicles. Mercedes-Benz is currently developing the Vision EQXX, an electric car with a real world range of more than 1,000 kilometres which will be unveiled in 2022.
