  • The company is expected to unveil more hybrid cars in India by 2025.

Maruti Suzuki is planning to expand its hybrid line-up by adding this technology to the upcoming Swift hatchback. Indian buyers are now gradually accepting hybrid technology, and several carmakers are adding it to their vehicles. The latest among them is the country's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki.

It is anticipated that the manufacturer is getting ready to reveal a brand-new Swift hybrid in the Indian market. The new car would reportedly deliver enhanced mileage. The manufacturer earlier launched the Swift Hybrid in Japan in December 2023. The hatchback came equipped with a new Z-series engine. The powertrain uses a recently designed Z12E 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 82 hp and 108 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a CVT and 48V. The mild hybrid technology increases horsepower and adds 60 Nm to the output.

Maruti Suzuki has made significant investments in hybrid technology, and it offers the Grand Vitara and Invicto models with robust hybrid systems. The company is expected to unveil more hybrid cars in India by 2025. The Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales at MSIL, Shashank Srivastava, earlier explained that by FY31, around 25 percent of total sales in the domestic Indian market will come from hybrid vehicles. The manufacturer presently offers seven models with Smart Hybrid and Intelligent Electric Hybrid, which are two different forms of hybrid technology.

According to the auto giant, the Smart Hybrid system further enhances fuel efficiency and driving performance. The engine silently starts in both manual and AT gears when the proper conditions are met, and it also stops on its own. It has two batteries, one of which is a lithium ion.

The self-charging hybrid electric technology that is also equipped in Toyota utilizes a petrol engine and an e-motor. The vehicle can be driven via electricity or with an engine and electric motor. The self-charging technology uses the energy generated when the driver applies the brakes or slows down to produce electricity while the vehicle is being driven. When the car is running, this kinetic energy is converted to electrical energy and stored in a battery. The stored energy is later released whenever the car requires more power. The power control unit revises this process for a short period of time.

Maruti Suzuki started its hybrid journey in 2015 with the Ciaz, which came with Smart Hybrid technology. The automaker later added the Intelligent Electric Hybrid system to the Grand Vitara, and it was unveiled in 2022.
