News Highlights

  • Maruti Suzuki might bring back the BS6 version of its diesel engine.
  • Maruti could also launch the Baleno hybrid.
  • Maruti WagonR EV could be launched soon.

Maruti Suzuki has released a couple of 'mysterious' teaser images on its various social media channels that have created a frenzy on the internet. The first teaser image gives away a cryptic message with text, "We're going to tell you everything" while the post comes with the caption, "Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone just yet...". The second teaser image flaunts a message which reads, "The inspiration behind our technology. Coming soon". Going by these images, nothing could be ascertained as of now but it might be an all-new diesel engine, a hybrid vehicle or an all-electric small car.

Lets talk about the first assumption which is of a BS6 compliant diesel engine. The company had discontinued its entire range of diesel vehicles post the implementation of BS6 Emission Norms on April 1, 2020. Since then, the automotive industry was abuzz with rumors as to when Maruti will bring back its diesel portfolio with an updated BS6 engine and now after almost a year, it seems that the company has finally heard the voice of auto enthusiasts and made its mind to being back the utterly missed diesel powered cars. Maruti Suzuki used to sell diesel versions of its several popular vehicles such as Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Ertiga, Ciaz and S-Cross in the Indian market before April 1, 2020 and they constituted a fairly large share to its overall sales.

The second possibility is that Maruti is planning to introduce a hybrid version of Baleno which will be powered by the same set of powertrain as the hybrid version of Swift showcased at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo. It will consist of a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 10kW electric motor. The former will develop top power of 91bhp and peak torque of 118Nm while the latter will contribute to an extra 30Nm of torque performance. Last but not the least, the third and eventual outcome of these teaser images could be the WagonR EV which is in the pipeline for too long. Maruti WagonR EV will draw power from a 10-25 kWh lithium-ion battery which will transfer power to a 72V electric motor. However, the stakes of WagonR EV making it to our roads are very low as reports indicate that it has been shelved due to high input costs.
