It was only recently that the Maruti Suzuki Celerio sold more than 1 lakh units ever since it was launched in India in 2014. Now the sales figures for the month of April are in and they reveal that the hatch from India’s largest maker has sold more units that the Renault Kwid and the Tata Tiago in the Indian market. Talking numbers, one finds that Maruti managed to sell 6,668 units of Celerio in April 2019 and in contrast to this, Tata managed to sell only 5,309 units of Tiago and French automaker Renault managed to sell only 5,336 units of Kwid. In comparison, Celerio managed to move more numbers than the Kwid and Tiago, however, if one looks at standalone numbers, the Maruti car has itself faced a decline in sales. Compared to April last year, the sales of Celerio saw a decline of around 3,332 units. The sales figure of Celerio for April 2018 was 10,000 units. This is the result of the overall slowdown in sales in the market that the country is currently witnessing.
To mitigate the same drop in sales, many companies are even scaling down production so as to prevent inventory pile-up. The same sluggish nature of sales as compared to the last year is also visible for the other two cars here. Tata Tiago and Renault Kwid both saw a fall in numbers in 2019 as compared to 2018. While Tiago saw a fall of around a quarter of sales as compared to 2018, Kwid saw a fall of around 8% in overall sales as compared to last year. Perhaps the rise in prices due to the introduction of latest mandatory safety features are in part to be held responsible for the slowdown in sales of the these entry level models in the Indian market.
Maruti Celerio locks horns with Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago in the Indian market. The company also said that Celerio sales in these years have revealed that almost 31% of car’s customers selected the automatic gearbox option on the hatchback and the top model of Celerio accounted for more than half of the sales of the hatch. Another factor that the sales figures reveal is that the dual fuel option of CNG-petrol contributed to around 20 percent of the sales figure.
Celerio comes equipped with a 1L 3 cylinder petrol engine that is rated to deliver 67 Bhp and 90 Nm. The engine is known to be very refined and is mated to a 5 speed manual or AMT automatic gearbox as per the choice of the customer. Earlier, Maruti also offered a double cylinder turbocharged diesel engine with the Celerio, but later discontinued it due to the customers ignoring the car over lower refinement of the diesel engine.
