Mahindra & Mahindra confirms 9 new SUVs for the Indian market

The 2020 Mahindra Thar has received an overwhelming response with more than 50,000 bookings since its launch last year. Now the homegrown automaker is planning to launch the 5-door Thar in 2023. The new Thar will be built on a brand new platform and get updated engines. However, it might retain the 2-door body style. Unlike the 2-door Thar which was aimed at the individual buyers, the 5-door Thar will be focusing on the families who need that extra space along with a rugged appeal.

The 5-door Thar will come with a longer wheelbase in comparison to the standard 2-door version that stands at 2450mm. By extending the wheelbase, the rear wheel arches will move back a bit thereby releasing space for a wider rear seat. However, if the wheelbase is extended, it might have implications on the off-road ability as the breakover angle will be reduced.

Performance-wise, the 5-door Mahindra Thar will be powered by the same 2.2 litre mHawk diesel and 2-litre Stallion petrol engine. Transmission options will include the same 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, we can expect the 5-door Thar to get a bump up in power.

Besides these, Mahindra also plans to introduce 4 new SUVs on the monocoque platform and 2 new electric vehicles by 2026. The automaker will introduce the next-gen Scorpio, 5-door Thar, and the all-new Bolero on the basis of ladder-frame chassis. The next-gen Scorpio will be introduced in the first quarter of 2022. While the all-new Bolero will be launched between 2023-26.
