News Highlights

  • The 5-door version will have a longer wheelbase than the 3-door model
  • The styling, platform and interior cabin will be identical to the standard Thar
  • Expected to launch by end of 2021, it will rival Maruti Jimny in India

Mahindra & Mahindra is said to be working on a 5-door version of the highly popular Thar SUV in the Indian market. We have learnt that it has received a green signal from Mahindra's board of directors. The pre-production prototype testing is expected to begin soon with Bolero's body. The Mahindra Thar 5-door version will directly rival Maruti Suzuki Jimny in the Indian market when it launches by the end of 2021. The length and wheelbase of the 5-door SUV will be more than the standard 3-door version of the Thar.

Presently, the details about Mahindra Thar 5-door are scarce but, in all likelihood, it will share the same GEN3 ladder-frame architecture as the 3-door model. Moreover, the styling is also expected to be identical, save for the addition of two new doors. The front fascia will flaunt the same signature grille with 6-slats, circular headlamps with LED DRLs and raised fenders. The cabin space will be increased due to the longer wheelbase which will be beneficial for the rear seat occupants. The rear seat will comfortably accommodate three adults. As for features, it will retain the same features as the 3-door version in the form of automatic climate control, cruise control and touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.

Under the bonnet, the 5-door model will have a petrol and diesel engine, carried over from the 3-door version. There will be a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit along with a 2.2L 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel motor at the helm of affairs. The former makes top power of 152bhp and peak torque of 300Nm while the latter develops maximum power output of 132bhp and highest torque delivery of 300Nm. Both these engines can be availed with both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic transmission options. Needless to say, a 4x4 drive system will also be offered as standard. Meanwhile, reports are emerging that Mahindra is working on a new 180mStallion Pro turbo petrol engine and it might debut with the Thar 5-door.
