Kai Motors has maintained a strong presence in India since making an entry 17 months ago. With an eye on the lucrative Indian market, it has launched 3 models namely - Seltos, Carnival and Sonet. On the back of these 3 products, the Korean brand has sold over 2 lakh cars in India in a short span of time. It has become the fastest automaker to reach the 2-lakh sales milestone in the domestic market. Out of the 2 lakh vehicles sold, Kia Seltos is the bestseller for Kia with 149,428 units sold so far. It is followed by the Sonet with 45,195 units, which was launched in September 2020 and the premium Carnival with a total sale of 5409 units.
Kia's strategy of targeting the SUV segment is the main reason behind its unprecedented growth. It reached the sales figure of 100,000 units in July last year and sold another 100,000 units within a record time of 6-months. This is remarkable considering that automakers often struggle to fulfill consumer demand which in turn leads to a huge waiting period. Kia Motors India’s manufacturing plant in Anantpur, Andhra Pradesh has an annual production capacity of approximately 300,000 units. This is the reason for a low waiting period for Sonet and Kia Seltos in comparison to its rivals.
Talking about the sales milestone, about 60 percent of the numbers have been achieved through the GTX variant of the Seltos and Sonet. While the Carnival Limousine trim has also contributed to this achievement. The manufacturer further claims that it has a regular presence in top 5 automakers list in India on back of just these 3 vehicles. This is remarkable but the brand is not sitting back. With 300 touchpoints throughout the country, Kia plans to further expand its network to Tier III & IV cities.
“In just over a year of sales operations, Kia has emerged as India’s youngest automobile disruptor and one of the best-selling automobile brands in the country. We have reached this landmark figure of two lakh sales units and set a record in the Indian industry due to the immense trust and confidence shown in us by our valued customers and the extended Kia family, which consists of our dealer partners, vendor partners and all other Kia stakeholders. We are extremely grateful for the response that the Kia brand has received, and we will continue to set new benchmarks in the Indian automobile industry with path-breaking design innovation, cutting-edge technology, and unique customer experiences”, commented Kookhyun Shim, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kia Motors India on this achievement.
