Jeep has finally unveiled the Commander which is going to be sold in India as the Jeep Meridian. The three-row SUV will first go on sale in Brazil followed by its India launch in mid-2022. The upcoming Commander (Meridian) has been spied doing test runs both in India and Brazil on multiple occasions in the past. Talking about the India-spec Jeep Meridian, it will be built at the Ranjangaon plant in the country. Once launched, it will rival the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, and Ford Endeavour.
Jeep Commander(Meridian) SUV: Design
The Jeep Commander (Meridian) looks like a longer Compass at a glance. But a closer look throws light on the differences in the design details. However, the three-row SUV shares quite a bit of its styling with the Grand Cherokee L. Upfront, it features a grille with the top section folded backwards. In addition, it gets rectangular full-LED headlamps and slim tail lamps. The front bumper comes with large faux vents that further features LED DRLs and fog lamps with chrome strips running across the fascia. In terms of dimensions, the new Jeep Commander (Meridian) stands at 4,769mm in length, 1,859mm in width, and 1,682mm in height. Talking about the wheelbase, it measures 2,794mm.
Moving inside the cabin of the Jeep Commander (Meridian), the dashboard design looks similar to the Compass. However, if we give a closer look, we get to see new metal inserts and suede fabric trim on the dashboard and door panels. The centre console gets rose gold accents. The seats come wrapped in brown leather upholstery with embroidered suede. The third-row passenger seat gets access to features like blower speed adjustment and charging ports. Moving on, the front centre armrest gets ‘Jeep 1941’ embossed on it. In terms of features, the new Jeep Commander (Meridian) gets a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system compatible with Apple Carplay & Android Auto, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, electrically adjustable driver & passenger seats, Alexa virtual assistant, Harman Kardon sound system, connected car features, electronic trunk, a panoramic sunroof among many others. The safety kit comprises seven airbags, an automatic emergency braking system, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and many more.
Performance-wise, the Brazilian-spec Jeep Commander will get the 2.0-litre Multijet diesel engine that does duty on the Compass. The engine will further produce a top power of 169 bhp and a peak torque of 380 Nm while being mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox. However, the diesel engine will not come equipped with the mild-hybrid system that was earlier being speculated. But the India-spec Commander (Meridian) will get the 48V mild-hybrid tech with a BSG (belt-driven starter generator) to keep emissions and fuel economy in check. Coming back to the Commander that will be sold in Brazil, it will get a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine with flex-fuel tech. The particular unit is capable of returning 184 bhp power and 270 Nm peak torque while being mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
