Iconic Vespa

History is an important indicator of the progress we have made so far be it in terms of economic development or technological innovation. One striking example is the Vespa Scooter, part of the Piaggio Group which was founded 74 years ago in Tuscany, Florence. Italy had just come out of WWII with its economy shattered and industries in ruin due to the massive military campaign taken by the Allies. Enrico Piaggio, the son of Piaggio's founder Rinaldo Piaggio, took a decision to move from aeronautical industry to transportation to solve Italy’s need for a modern and affordable mode of transportation. Piaggio then came up with the Vespa, it means Wasp in the native Italian language.

Since then, Vespa became a recognizable face of scooters worldwide.  In 1952, Audrey Hepburn side-saddled Gregory Peck's Vespa in the feature film Roman Holiday for a jolly ride through Rome, resulting in over 1,00,000 sales. So, you can imagine the charm of a Vespa scooter in the old days and it continues to do so in 2020. Vespa is now available in the electric range illustrating the journey of Piaggio from the aeronautical to the automobile world.

Many have tried to imagine the Vespa Scooter in their own vision, while some have failed others have got rave reviews. One such automotive design firm getting good reception is Mightyseed Designs, a product design firm based out of Tamil Nadu In India. Mightyseed have done something out of the box, they have gone for an all-electric avatar. The scooter rendering is a marked departure from the base aesthetics while retaining the Vespa Scooter DNA.

Key highlights of the rendered scooter are the notable haunches, single-seat layout, straight-rod handlebar and lack of sharp cuts. Added features include an instrument console, twin LED DRLs, lidar display to indicate oncoming traffic. You can complain about the lack of mirrors but the presence of lidar display overcomes it quite brilliantly. Presence of unique headlights and positioning of tail lamps gives respect to the gone by era of the scooter. Mighyseed Designs outlines that the Vespa 48 concept’s hub-mounted motor will come mated to a 30Ah lithium-ion battery pack. There is good storage space underneath the seat, making the rendered Vespa a perfect holiday trip scooter for a single person.
