Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has commenced Kona Electric SUV recall in the country. The South Korean automaker is voluntarily recalling 456 units of fully-electric SUV Kona. The reason for the recall is attributed to the possible issue of electrical deficiencies in the SUV’s battery system. Units that were manufactured between 1st of April 2019 to 31st October, 2020 are currently being recalled with no cost to the customers. All the recalled 456 Kona vehicles fitted with a high-voltage battery will be inspected for any faults. Recalled owners will be notified to bring their vehicle for inspection at authorized Hyundai Dealership nearest to them.
Hyundai Kona Electric SUV was launched in India at a price of Rs 23.75 lakhs (ex-showroom), India in the month of August 2019. It competes against the likes of MG ZS EV and Tata Nexon EV in its segment. The fully-electric SUV is powered by a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Kona delivers 135 bhp of maximum power output and 394 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are taken care of by single-speed reduction gearbox. Hyundai Kona provides 452 kms of range on a single full charge (ARAI-certified). If one uses an AC charging, the battery takes about 6 hours to recharge from 0 to 100 percent. In the case of a DC fast Charger (50 kW), the battery takes just an hour to recharge from 0 to 80 percent.
Earlier this year in October, the brand had recalled Kona electric in South Korea. The recall was undertaken to update the software and battery replacements after due inspection. A total of 25,564 units built between the period of September 2017 to March 2020 were recalled. The safety recall was taken in the light of reported fires in the Hyundai Kona. The battery used in the SUV is sourced from LG Chem Ltd. Hyundai isn’t the only manufacturer to recall its electric vehicles, General Motors had to recall 70,000 EVs with batteries sourced from the same supplier.
