The company officials laid the foundation of its manufacturing facility on May 6, 1996

Hyundai is celebrating 'Silver Jubilee' in the country as it has successfully completed the journey of 25 years in the Indian market. Walking down the memory lane, it was on May 6, 1996 when the company officials laid the foundation of its manufacturing facility at Irungattukottai in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The production unit finally started operations in September 1998 with the commissioning of Hyundai’s first integrated car manufacturing plant outside Korea. Hyundai Santro was the first car to roll out from the assembly line of this plant.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. S S Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., said, “Envisioning India at the heart of global manufacturing and commerce, Hyundai, began its journey with the country 25 years ago towards a mutual progress. Hyundai achieved its highest ever market share of 17.4 percent in CY2020 in the Indian market. The South-Korean automaker has sold more than 9 million vehicles in India while the total investment that it has brought in the country exceeds $ 4 Billion. It has approx 1154 sales outlets and 1298 service centres across the country. To add to the never ending list of accomplishments, Hyundai was the numero uno SUV brand in India last year with total sales of over 1.80 Lakh units. As far as exports are concerned, Hyundai is the country's leading exporter of cars with over 3 million vehicles exported till date to nearly 88 countries across the globe. The company's Chennai facility has an annual production capacity of 7.50 Lakh units.
