Hyundai Planning To Launch New Version of Elantra Sedan in India in October 3

Hyundai India has just released images of the facelifted, 2020 Elantra D-Segment sedan, which will be launched here on the 3rd of October, as a challenger to the likes of the Honda Civic, Skoda Octavia and the Toyota Corolla Altis. For the first time in its history in India, the 2020 Elantra Facelift will be sold as a petrol-only car. Bookings of the car will open at all Hyundai dealerships across India tomorrow.  Here are a couple of pictures that Hyundai has released of the India-spec version.

In terms of styling, the 2020 Hyundai Elantra gets a major makeover both at the front and the rear. Up front, the headlamps are narrower, sharper units while the grille is a new item. The front bumper is also an all-new item. The alloy wheels get revised styling but the rest of the profile of the car remains largely similar to the outgoing version. At the rear, there are more stylistic changes in the form of sharper tail lamps, a new bumper, reprofiled boot lid and Elantra badging displayed prominently on the boot lid. All in all, the car looks very bit facelifted on the outside. On the inside, expect new color schemes and materials, raising fit and finish levels by a few notches.

Mechanically, the new car will be a petrol-only offering, dumping the 1.6-liter CRDI turbocharged diesel engine that’s also seen on the likes of the Creta and Verna. What the Elantra will go with is a 2 liter-4 cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with 150 Bhp of peak power and 192 Nm of peak torque. This engine is likely to be offered with two gearbox options: 6 speed manual and torque converter automatic, but we won’t be surprised if Hyundai decides to take the auto-only approach with the facelifted Elantra. In fact, Honda has followed this approach quite successfully with the new Civic sedan, and it remains to be seen if Hyundai will follow suit.

Sometime next year, based on market demand, Hyundai could consider introducing a BS6 (Bharat Stage 6) emission norms compliant diesel engine: the 1.5 liter, 115 Bhp-250 Nm unit that’s found on the Kia Seltos. This is the only BS6 diesel engine that Hyundai has ready access to in India, and will soon be introduced on the Creta. Considering the fact that the Elantra has used the 1.6-liter CRDI diesel for generations, moving to the 1.5-liter BS6 diesel seems logical as this engine is the replacement of the 1.6-liter unit. Prices will be revealed on the 3rd of October, at launch. Don’t expect to see any major revision upwards. The outgoing Elantra’s prices start from Rs. 18.92 lakhs, ex-showroom Delhi.
