Hyundai and Kia unveiles Uni Wheel Drive System

News Highlights

  • This new wheel system is going to be a game-changer for EV vehicles as it packs them up into a compact unit kept in the wheel hub.
  • The companies’ claims that this wheel system will sumptuously reduce the EV’s length of drive shafts keeping it closely mounted.

The "Uni Wheel," or Universal Wheel Drive System, is a brand-new wheel-integrated drive system that Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have unveiled. The new technology integrates a portion of the drive system into the wheel hub of the car, potentially freeing up even more space in future electric vehicles. The reduction gear and other key EV drive components are moved by the system into a small unit that is housed in the wheel hub.

According to the companies, the new system will shorten drive shafts and enable electric motors to be mounted even closer to the wheels in future EVs. This will enable more space to be used effectively to accommodate bigger batteries or to add more cabin and storage space.

The Uni Wheel uses a unique planetary gear arrangement with a sun gear in the middle, four pinion gears on either side, and a ring gear encircling it. The motor's power is transferred to the sun gear, which turns the pinion gears to spin the ring gear and, when coupled with the wheel, propels the vehicle.

The multi-link mechanism of the Uni Wheel, which consists of connected pinion gears to enable multi-axis movement, is one of its distinguishing features. Increased suspension articulation is made possible by this, improving ride comfort. According to both businesses, the new Uni Wheel system also enables better torque vectoring and reduces drivetrain losses, especially when navigating uneven terrain.

“We are pleased to showcase innovative ideas that could become game changers in the future mobility market,” said Jongsool Park, Senior Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Technology Development of Hyundai Motor Group. “We will perfect the technology so that customers can experience mobility in a completely different and new way.”

Hyundai claims that the technology behind the Uni Wheel is scalable and can be used in robotics, bicycles, motorized wheelchairs, and other personal mobility devices in addition to passenger cars.
