New Honda Civic sedan takes massive edge over rivals with tremendous market response.

Honda ended the waiting period for fans when it officially launched the tenth-generation Civic sedan in the Indian market after a gap of seven long years. Honda Civic will lock horns with Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla and Skoda Octavia in the Indian market. The last time Civic was in the Indian market, it was the eighth-generation model, which means that the Japanese maker has skipped an entire generation as the current Civic in the Indian market is the tenth-generation model.

As we have already told you before, the Japanese maker had released the information that their all-new Civic had got nearly 2,400 bookings in the first 40 days since its bookings opened. To let you know, the bookings for the all-new Honda Civic began on 14 February, 2019. Honda has priced the all-new Civic slightly higher than the rivals in the Indian market. Prices for Honda Civic begin at Rs 17.69 lakh for the base model and the top model comes in at Rs. 22.29 lakh, ex-showroom.

Taking a look at the competition we find that Hyundai Elantra’s base model begins at Rs. 13.81 lakhs, Skoda offers the base model of its Octavia at Rs. 15.99 lakhs whereas Toyota has priced its Corolla Altis at Rs. 15.7 lakhs. Toyota’s Corolla Altis has so far dominated the sales in the segment. Talking numbers, Honda sent 2,291 units of the all-new Civic to the market while the segment leader so far, Toyota only sent 229 units of Corolla Altis. South Korean maker Hyundai sent only 86 units of Elantra while Czech maker Skoda sent 265 units of Octavia to the market. Therefore, one can clearly see that Honda Civic made a contribution of around 80% to the total sales in the segment.

The numbers must be taken with a pinch of salt as the sales figures are only initial and currently the bookings of past are being fulfilled, therefore the upcoming months may see the numbers go down by a bit. Not to mention that the current dispatches also include display and test drive units being sent to dealerships. Since Civic is a new entrant in the segment, the initial response is bound to clock in higher figures. Therefore, only the coming time will tell as to how successful Honda’s latest premium sedan offering will be in the Indian market. A fresh look at sales once the numbers stabilize will give us a fair picture as to how the Japanese maker’s latest offering the market has fared.
