Ferrari has unveiled its latest mid-rear-engined two-seater berlinetta spyder, the 296 GTS, via a digital event. It is the first open-top company model to get a 6-cylinder engine. The engine is paired with an electric motor which debuted on the 296 GTB. Ferrari 296 GTS is also offered with the more extreme Assetto Fiorano package. The Italian sports car brand is also providing customers with an extended seven-year maintenance programme with the 296 GTS which covers all regular maintenance for the first seven years or 120,000 km of the car’s life.
The cabin of Ferrari 296 GTS is based on the new concept of an entirely digital interface. When the engine is off, the onboard instruments go black. The seats are offered in an exclusive Italian leather trim. The Assetto Fiorano package further gets special GT racing-derived adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers and high downforce carbon-fibre appendages on the front bumper. It also includes a special livery inspired by the 250 Le Mans and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2R high performance tyres. The roof takes 14 seconds to retract or deploy at speeds of up to 45kmph. The silhouette remains very similar to that of the 296 GTB while it has a dry weight of just 1540 kg which is class-leading.
Mechanically, the 296 GTS is powered by a 3.0L V6 twin-turbo engine which is paired with a plug-in electric motor. The engine develops top power of 664 bhp while the motor pumps out additional 166 bhp. The combined power output and torque delivery stands at 830 bhp and 740 Nm. The power is transmitted to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission while the power delivery from the electric motor is available in hybrid and full-electric driving modes. The 296 GTS does a 0-100kmph sprint in 2.9 seconds while clocking a top speed of more than 330kmph. In the full-electric mode, it has a range of 25 kms. A high-voltage battery of 7.45 kWh capacity and an inverter deliver power to the electric motor.
This is the first ever Ferrari spider with a rear-wheel drive-only PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) architecture in which the ICE is integrated with a rear-mounted electric motor. It is not expected to go on sale in the Indian market before the end of this year. However, the 296 GTB will be launched in the next couple of months in India.
