Delhi Traffic Police issues a new directive in regard to rear-seat belts and mirrors in cars and 2-wheelers respectively.

In the last couple of months, we are coming across a series of announcements in regards to the safety of motorists as well as pedestrians in India. In a fresh development, the Delhi Police Western Range has started a drive to spread awareness about the use of rear-view mirrors on scooters & rear seat belts in cars. This comes in the backdrop of an order issued by Delhi DCP, Traffic, Western Range. The authorities had observed that a number of two-wheelers were spotted on the roads without rear-view mirrors. This is quite dangerous as the rider can’t spot vehicles coming from behind while blocking the traffic too.

The front row seat belt compliance is good as most of the vehicles plying on the Indian road come equipped with seat-belt reminders. Plus, if one is found not complying with the front seat belt norms, he or she can be issued a challan. The rear-seat safety is also paramount but there has been a disregard in that aspect. It has forced the traffic authorities to issue a directive for the rear-seat passengers to start wearing belts for safety reasons.

The traffic police department highlighted the lack of awareness regarding the use of rear-seat belts in the car and rear-view mirrors in two-wheelers. One can be penalised for the same under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989.  To make the motorists understand the importance of rear-seat belts and rear-view mirrors, the Traffic Police, Western Range, Delhi has initiated a drive starting from 13 January 2020 to 23 January 2021. As per the new order, Delhi Police will be checking cars and two-wheelers on the two aspects. In case, one is found violating the rules, fines will be handed out.
