The Delhi government is set to phase out bike taxis soon, as it is currently pushing for full electrification of app-based cab aggregators. A notification has been issued by the government called the Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme 2023. As per these schemes, only electric bike taxis will be allowed to operate in the Delhi-NCR region by 2030. In Delhi, some of the main bike taxi operators that have both electric and petrol models in their fleets are Rapido, Uber, and Ola.

The Delhi government’s plan is to electrify bike taxis, as it is aiming to achieve zero emissions via public transport. The government already has almost a thousand e-buses in its fleet. On Wednesday, the environment minister of the national capital, Mr. Gopal Rai, addressed a press conference and said that the cab aggregator guidelines included stage-wise electrification of bike taxi operators for the first time.

According to the recently presented cab aggregator policy, all app-based companies that are currently operating in Delhi will have to get their license within a period of 3 months from the date of the notification. These licenses will last for five years and will be valid based on annual fees. Under the new schemes, vehicles that are less than 2 years old will get a discount of 50 percent.

According to the data provided by the state government, almost 36 percent of the total pollution in the nation's capital is caused by vehicular emissions. The government even banned the BS3 Petrol and BS4 Diesel vehicles to curb spiked pollution levels in the past few weeks. It recently lifted the ban after the improvement in AQI.

The plan to electrify cabs and bike taxis is considered a move to reduce the number of polluting vehicles in Delhi. Gopal Rai stated that “there has been a long need for licensing and regulating the aggregators in Delhi for smoother operations for Delhiites. India has set a target to achieve net zero emissions by 2070. This scheme is an initiative by the capital city towards the same. It is also the first time that we are allowing bike taxis to run in the city.”

The new rule not only suggests electrification of bike taxis, but it also ensures public safety and convenience. The Delhi government also said that it will make a rule on hiked pricing if customers decide to file a complaint against cab aggregators.
