Maruti Gypsy is an iconic name in itself in the world of automobiles. Initially, Maruti Gypsy was sold in the Indian market with a 970cc F10A Suzuki engine but it never achieved high sales figures. Indian law enforcement took a liking to the four-wheel-drive vehicle suitable for harsh terrain and off-roading environments. Higher Ranked Indian Army officers are regularly spotted being driven to various base camps and military installations in a Maruti Gypsy. The off-roader was discontinued in India about two years back but still remains a favourite of Indian Army. Recently, the Indian Army received 700 New BS4 Maruti Gypsy's in the month of June 2020.
Maruti Gypsy is powered by a BS4 1.3-litre petrol engine, it has become a key mode of transportation for the Indian Army especially while operating in the mountainous regions. The engine churns out 80 bhp of power and 103 Nm of peak torque. It comes equipped with a four-wheel-drive system and a low-range gearbox. Maruti Gypsy is popular due to its low maintenance cost and familiarization among the Armed Forces. A compact off-roader, Gypsy is quite suitable for the hilly terrains.
Currently, Maruti has discontinued the Gypsy in India with no production for civilian's in the near future. It is the Army who still seem to have a linking for this old fashioned SUV despite the fact that it recently switched over to the Tata Safari as one of their vehicle's in the fleet. The delivery of this new batch just goes to show that the Armed Forces love for it is not lost yet. Gypsy nowadays is only manufactured for the Indian Army as it does not meet the new safety and emission regulation norms.This could be the prime reasons behind its discontinuation of production for civilians.
Maruti Gypsy evokes nostalgia among the Indian auto enthusiasts with some keen for the SUV to return again. The company currently has no plans in regards to the future reintroduction of the Gypsy but its possible replacement could be the Suzuki Jimny that is expected to arrive sometime soon. In fact to test the market sentiment, Maruti did unveil the Jimny at this year's Auto Expo 2020.
