Which Variant of Tata’s Nexon Should You Buy?

The Nexon is available in eight different variants, four each, for the petrol and diesel models. The base variant costs ₹5.85 lakh (all prices ex-showroom) for the petrol and ₹6.85 lakh for the diesel, and though this price is very tempting, it is the lowest spec model and comes without a lot of equipment. So, which variant offers the best value?

The XE variant, as with most base variants, is quite limited in terms of equipment. The car features electric power windows only on the front. The car does not even come with a media system or remote central locking. Tata has, to its credit, provided dual-front airbags and ABS with EBD in all variants of the Nexon. Unless price is the primary concern, the base variant is best left off your list though.

On the other end, you have the top-spec XZ+ variant that comes with alloy wheels, projector headlamps with DRLs, an eight-speaker music system by Harman, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Android Auto and voice commands for media as well as AC controls, a rear camera, front and rear fog lamps, an engine start button. Additionally, this is the only variant in which you can opt for a dual-colour roof (at an additional cost of ₹15,000). This is the clear choice for those who aren’t restrained by a budget and are looking for a fully-loaded car.

Coming to buyers who fall in-between these two extremes, the choice lies between the XT and XM variants. Out of these two, the XM features a decently long list of equipment at a premium of ₹54,900 for the diesel and ₹64,900 for the petrol. For this additional sum, one gets a Harman-developed sound system with four speakers and Bluetooth, USB and Aux-in connectivity, steering-mounted controls, rear parking sensors, remote central locking and electric outside mirror adjustment. The price difference for the XT variant over the XM is ₹80,000 for the petrol and ₹75,000 for the diesel. This premium gets you roof rails, rear AC vents, electric folding mirrors, automatic climate control and a cooled glovebox. All of this isn’t worth the premium over the XM.

The top-spec XZ+ variant costs ₹1.15 lakh more than the XT for the petrol and diesel models. The top-spec really is loaded to the brim and it makes sense to stretch your budget and buy this car.
